Tinglang

Features

Everything Tinglang 0.3 does today. What it doesn't do yet is at the end of the page.

Live captions over anything

System audio or the microphone, captioned as you listen, with a translation under each line. Recognition and translation run on your Mac with Apple SpeechAnalyzer and Translation (macOS 26).

  • Tinglang opens as a floating panel; the main window stays out of the way until you need it.
  • Card or text-only display, like desktop lyrics. Background, colours, size and number of lines are yours to set.
  • Lock the panel and clicks pass through to the video underneath. ⌘⇧T starts and stops.
  • When you stop, you see the length and word count, then View or Make course.

Voice Memos from your iPhone

Tinglang lists the recordings on this Mac, including the ones synced from your iPhone through iCloud, ticks today's new ones and transcribes them into History by the time they were recorded.

  • It needs Full Disk Access, and it only reads the Voice Memos library; it never changes it.

Close listening and dictation

A player with video, ±5 s, 0.6–1.5× speed and A–B loops, by hand or per sentence. Tap a line to jump to it.

  • Dictation goes sentence by sentence and is graded correct, close or wrong, with a word-by-word diff.
  • Search across everything you captured, and export SRT, VTT or TXT.

Courses from what you heard

Turn a session into a course and learn it with blind listening, shadowing, retelling and a short quiz, always against the original audio.

  • Basic course: offline and done in about a second. Dictionary glosses, phrases, blanks for blind listening, shadowing passages.
  • AI course: with a provider you add. You see the estimated cost first, and Tinglang asks before it sends a transcript to a cloud host.
  • Courses use the English V3 course.json format; existing ones import too.

Review and speak

Expressions you save come back with FSRS-6 spaced repetition. Speak is a place to record yourself and keep notes.

Share files, not accounts

Export a recording or a course as a .tinglang file and send it however you like; import the ones others send you. There is no sharing server.

System requirements

macOS 14.2 or later. Live captions and transcription currently need macOS 26. On macOS 14.2–15 everything else works; on-device captions for older systems and Windows are planned.

Not yet

Pronunciation scores, downloads from video sites, cloud sync, a sharing server and Discover content, editing subtitles inside a course, Windows and phones.
